University of Ibadan, the nation's premier university, has expelled 3,000 students for cultism-related activities,Vice Chancellor,Prof. Olu Bamiro, said yesterday in Abuja.
Bamiro told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview that the students were expelled in the last three years.``The university's anti-cultism committee, which carries out regular enlightenment campaigns on the evils of cult-related activities, identified the students.
``Through the activities of the committee, we have successfully been able to show those who should not be in the system the way out,'' he said.Bamiro also said the university had set up an effective security network, which keeps 24 hours surveillance on the campus. The vice chancellor added that through the combined efforts of the committee and other security agencies, the university had been able to put cult activities in check.
He further said the Post University Matriculation Examinations (UME) had helped in the screening of students admitted into the institution.``The post UME screening has helped to improve the quality of candidates admitted into the institution because we engage prospective students one-on-one,'' he added.
Bamiro said the activities of Christian and Muslim organisations, ``which help in educating the students on the evil of cultism, have also had a moderating influence on the activities of cultists''. The spiritual side has been effective and supportive and cultism activities have been at its lowest ebb because we constantly engage the services of religious organisations on campus.'' he added.
The University was established in 1948 as the University College, Ibadan, affiliated to the University of London, before it became the University ofIbadan (UI).
